Tray With Magnets
Experimenting using magnets to hold a cover on.
Using more of the leftover Sapele for the main tray, and a 1/4" piece of Cherry for the cover.
First level drilled out. The plan is to go down 1/4", then leave a shoulder around the edge, and drill deeper in the middle for the actual storage space.
Edges all chiselled up. Look at all those Forstner bit holes! Ug!
Added a notch for a finger-hold. Then drilled a new depth, another 1/4", for the storage space.

Both depths now straight-edged.
New tool/technique - used a router plane to take out thin layers of the bottom section. This got rid of the holes.
Bottom finished, and some small sink holes for the magnets and washers.
A bunch of hand sanding, then an application of Tried and True finish on both the tray and the cover. Nice colors, nice contrast.
Final product, with magnets and washers fixed with Krazy Glue. It's a bit messy, that glue, but does the job.
Took a while, but fun playing around with things. In the end, I don't think I'm a big fan of the magnets, but will be good for some projects. The four magnets on this tray are quite strong - could have gotten away with two on this, I think. That lid will definitely not fall off on its own!
